About Us
Tishmal Hair was born out of Felicite Hawkins' love for art, bold adornments, and desire to connect to her Native roots. Tishmal, meaning hummingbird in her tribe’s Native language, was a name given to her oldest son when he was 3 years old by a tribal elder. In Native cultures, hummingbirds are held in very high regard. This little bird is seen as a spiritual guide from heaven bringing messages of hope and guidance. For many Natives, the hummingbird is a sacred creature that embodies the very best of nature.
At Tishmal Hair, Felicite infuses each piece with the essence of the hummingbird, a creature that embodies a vibrant array of colors and remarkable strength. As there are over 365 species of hummingbirds, each with their own unique and striking hues, Felicite's Color Story Collections capture a similar diversity and beauty. Hummingbirds craft their nests using spiderwebs, and this inspiration is echoed in Tishmal Hair pieces, which feature silk draping for an organic and natural feel. The intricate fringe on each piece mimics the figure 8 wing pattern of hummingbirds, symbolizing agility and grace. Hummingbirds are incredibly strong despite their delicate appearance, much like the metal components in Felicite's designs. Each piece is exceptionally light, a nod to the hummingbird's featherlight body, which weighs less than a dime. Just as hummingbirds migrate solo, each statement piece from Tishmal Hair stands beautifully on its own, showcasing the singular artistry and strength inherent in Felicite's work.
Felicite is educated with an Art Degree from Wofford College and a Tribal Member of the Santa Rosa Band of Cahuilla Indians. Felicite is a self-taught bead artist and resides outside of Annapolis, Maryland with her 3 children.
